Members of UNCA SDS have agreed to participate and be on alert with the community organization Defensa comunitaria, a Latin@-run coalition of activist groups and community members. Due to the escalation of ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) raids, the organization is asking our friends and comrades to stay alert and report any suspicious police behavior, such as road blocks or checkpoints in the Asheville-Buncombe area.

We, the University of North Carolina-Asheville chapter of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), stand in solidarity with the student occupation in New York University that started on February 19, 2009. The student coalition Take Back NYU!, including SDS, has occupied the third floor of the Kimmel Center building that has caused the administration to shut down the entire building. Students have occupied after several attempts to negotiate and demand for full disclosure of university investments, for stable tuition rates, a creation of scholarships for Palestinian students, and for an immediate end to investment in companies who profit from the occupation Palestine.

We support the demands by Take Back NYU! and SDS in their effort to oppose U.S. imperialism and the military-academic complex.

We condemn police intimidation, harassment, and the raid that have occurred against a democratic movement to oppose NYU’s investment in pro-imperialist projects. It is also deplorable that they have shut down electricity and the internet system to stifle support and news updates from inside the building.

Finally, we applaud the continued support of faculty, staff, and students that oppose U.S. imperialism and war profiteering from NYU president Sexton and the university administration elite. Several hundred other student and social activists support the occupation from outside, while statements of solidarity have poured in from across the nation. We at UNC-Asheville join them in demanding greater transparency, student participation in university affairs, and an end to pro-imperialist university investments.

Victory to the NYU students!
Down with U.S. imperialism!
